The November 18th IFSO event, "Preventing Software Patents: Why and How", was a great success.

From August 30th to September 1st, members of IFSO met with Beatriz Busaniche. Topics discussed included the setting up of the FSF Latin America, as well as plenty of socialising and general software freedom discussions.

2005-July-19

Announcement: On Thursday 21st, ILUG and IFSO will be hosting a talk by Ciarán O'Riordan. Ciaran has been lobbying in Brussels to keep Europe free of software patents. The topic of the talk will be the next moves in the campaign.

The venue is the ICS building, Mount St. Upper. The talk will start at 1930h.

IFSO's application to become an associate organisation of the Free Software Foundation Europe has been approved. We are now an official associate organisation.

The DCU debating society in conjunction with Redbrick (the DCU network society) will hold a debate on the motion "That this House thinks that Software Patents within the European Union is a Bad Idea". The debate will be held on Wednesday 30th of March, in CG 86 (in the Henry Gratton building) at 6pm. Malcolm Tyrrell from IFSO will be one of the speakers at the debate. full details (including other speakers).

2005-March-04

IFSO e-mails the Irish representative on the Competitiveness Council, Micheál Martin (the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment), calling on him to object when the software patent directive is tabled as an "A-item". The text of the e-mail is here: 20050304swpats-council.txt.

IFSO faxes this letter to Commissioner McCreevy, asking him to honour JURI's request for a restart.

IFSO faxes this letter to Brian Crowley, MEP, urging him to support a restart motion when the JURI committee considers the software patent directive.

IFSO faxes this letter to Mary Coughlan, requesting that she object if the Software Patents directive is put forward as an A-item at the agriculture meeting.

On Friday, Jan 14th 2005, the UCD internet society, Netsoc, in association with IFSO, will be hosting a talk by Georg Greve, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe. The talk will be on the challenges to Free Software in the digital age and about the work of the Free Software Foundation Europe.

The talk is open to the public and will be held in Theatre Q of the UCD Arts Block at 19:30 on Friday, January 14th. For more details, see the Netsoc page.
